60% Loss in Influence: The Shocking Impact of Position Bias in LLMs

In the LlamaIndex’s AgentWorkflow system, a significant issue arises when one agent hands off a task to another. Research indicates that in an 8k token context window, information in the first 10% of positions can lose over 60% of its influence weight. This “position bias” causes large language models (LLMs) to forget the user’s original request as new messages accumulate. When Agent A hands off to Agent B, the original request often gets buried or evicted due to token limits, leading to Agent B failing to continue processing the request. Initial attempts to fix this by modifying the handoff prompt or reinserting the original request after handoff were unsuccessful. The solution involved strategic memory management: keeping only user messages and agent responses in the chat history, moving tool call results to the system prompt, and using the framework’s state system to preserve context. This approach significantly improved the workflow, allowing agents to continue conversations seamlessly and produce complete reports.

I feel an impact in my industry for sure. This is NOT just some story you read about that impacts ā€œthemā€.If I had to describe to someone how this feels as a fairly sane American, it’s like being in the 3rd row in a minivan and the middle row is filled with drunk and wild family

Depends what you mean affected.Did I see I investments and balances disintegrate? Yes.Did I REALIZE those losses? No.Given I have time still I guess technically over the long term, no.

The impact of all this is enormous – loss of jobs, cascading impact of loans against equity, no investment into new work – will destroy consumer sentiment, credit card debt will turned into delinquencies and mortgage’s into foreclosures ..

Well that’s rubbish. The people that feel the ā€˜sting’ are those that count on their super (or 401k) to survive in later life. The 10-20% loss in the market has drastically and practically affected a lot of working (or lower middle) income people.

schrodinger’s portfolio thesis. fascinating but flawed. unrealized losses still impact opportunity cost and psychological burden. better to face reality and adapt strategy accordingly.

YES, this has severe effects! I lost $150k in three days time and the market is going to drop even further with no end in sight. Ever heard of the time value of money? I will spend God knows how long clamoring back up. It’s at Covid levels.
