Lawmakers are pushing for an immediate ban of the Chinese chatbot DeepSeek on government devices due to national security concerns. The app, which has become the most-downloaded in the US, is suspected of having a backdoor that could allow the Chinese Communist Party to access Americans’ private data. Research indicates that DeepSeek sends user login information to China Mobile, a company banned by the FCC for use in the US. This has led to bipartisan legislation, the No DeepSeek on Government Devices Act, set to be introduced to address this “alarming threat.” If passed, the ban could be implemented within 60 days. DeepSeek, despite its low development cost, rivals OpenAI’s reasoning model and its open-source nature has fueled its popularity.
