China’s AI sector is witnessing a surge in innovation, with startups like Stepfun, ModelBest, Zhipu, and Infinigence AI making significant strides. Stepfun, founded in April 2023, has released 11 foundational AI models, with its largest, Step-2, boasting over 1 trillion parameters. Its multimodal model, Step-1V, ranks high for visual input understanding, and demand for its API surged over 45-fold in the second half of 2024. ModelBest, established in 2022, focuses on efficiency with its MiniCPM series, which has only 4 billion parameters but matches the performance of GPT-3.5. Zhipu AI, valued at over $2 billion, is developing foundational models and AI products, with its GLM-4-Plus matching GPT-4’s performance. Infinigence AI, with $140 million in funding, tackles AI infrastructure challenges by optimizing heterogeneous computing clusters, claiming a 30% reduction in training time. These startups are carving out niches in China’s AI marathon, showcasing the country’s high ambitions in the field.
