50% of NBA Teams Now Use Tactile Tech for Blind Fans – Here’s Why It’s a Game-Changer!

In a groundbreaking move, 50% of NBA teams, including the Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, and Phoenix Suns, have adopted tactile technology to enhance the live game experience for blind and low-vision fans. These devices, developed by startups like OneCourt, Touch2see, and Field of Vision, allow users to follow the game through vibrations on a tablet that mimic the ball’s movement on the court. OneCourt’s devices, available at no cost to visitors, have been distributed at NBA games with five devices each in Portland and Sacramento, and ten in Phoenix, thanks to sponsorships from Ticketmaster and the Phoenix Suns/Phoenix Mercury Foundation. The technology connects to the NBA’s real-time game data, ensuring users receive immediate feedback. Despite some technical challenges, such as devices failing to connect for an entire half of a game, the overall reception has been positive. Users like Jordan Moon and Macaulay Beasley have praised the devices for making them feel more engaged with the game. However, experts caution about the sustainability of such technologies, noting the risk of them becoming obsolete. OneCourt plans to expand its reach by introducing the tablets into users’ homes by 2026, aiming to sustain and broaden accessibility.
