10-Time All-Star Brittney Griner Shakes Up WNBA with Atlanta Dream Signing

After 11 seasons with the Phoenix Mercury, Brittney Griner, a 10-time WNBA All-Star, has signed a one-year deal with the Atlanta Dream. This move marks one of the most surprising free agency signings in the league’s history. Griner, who was the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2013, averaged 17.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game in 2024. Her decision to join Atlanta was influenced by the team’s players and her family considerations. The signing can’t be made official until Saturday. Griner’s departure from Phoenix signals a new era for the Mercury, especially with the potential retirement of Diana Taurasi, who has been with the team for two decades. The Dream, now led by new coach Karl Smesko, also features Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray. Meanwhile, the Las Vegas Aces considered signing Griner but have shifted focus to other players. Phoenix, in response, has made significant trades, acquiring Alyssa Thomas and Ty Harris.
