100% Effective: The New HIV Prevention Drug That’s Changing the Game

A groundbreaking trial in June 2024 revealed that lenacapavir, a new HIV prevention drug, was 100% effective in protecting over 5,000 girls and women in Uganda and South Africa. This drug, administered via injection every six months, outperformed daily PrEP pills, which require consistent daily intake. Lenacapavir, developed by Gilead, has been approved by the FDA for treating resistant HIV strains but not yet for prevention. However, Gilead has made agreements to produce generic versions for 120 low-income countries. In October, further trials showed lenacapavir to be 96% effective in preventing HIV among 3,200 diverse groups. Despite the availability of effective HIV prevention drugs since 2012, access remains a challenge. The United Nations aims to end AIDS by 2030, with over 1 million new infections annually, highlighting the urgent need for broader access to these innovative treatments.
