49ers’ Deebo Samuel: $31.55 Million Cap Hit if Traded Before June 1

The San Francisco 49ers have granted wide receiver Deebo Samuel permission to seek a trade. This decision comes after Samuel, who is 29, expressed his desire to move on during his exit meeting with coach Kyle Shanahan in January. Trading Samuel before June 1 would result in a significant $31.55 million dead money hit on the team’s salary cap. However, if the trade is completed before his $15.4 million option bonus due on March 22, the financial implications could be mitigated. Samuel’s performance last season was his worst, with only 806 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns. His career stats include 334 receptions for 4,792 yards and 22 touchdowns, along with 202 carries for 1,143 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns, the latter being the most by a wide receiver since at least 1960. The 49ers are preparing for life potentially without Samuel, having drafted Ricky Pearsall and extended contracts to receivers Brandon Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings.
