The San Francisco 49ers have rehired Robert Saleh as their defensive coordinator after a 16-day search. Saleh, who previously served in the same role from 2017 to 2020, returns after a stint as the New York Jets coach. During his earlier tenure, the Niners’ defense was among the NFL’s elite, ranking 10th in points allowed per game (21.9), third in defensive efficiency (63.15), and second in yards allowed per play (4.9) over the 2019 and 2020 seasons. They also tied for ninth with 47 takeaways. The team’s defense struggled in recent years, ranking 29th in points allowed per game (25.6) and 31st in red zone efficiency allowed (68.4%) last season. Coach Kyle Shanahan emphasized the need for a coordinator who could adapt and problem-solve, qualities he believes Saleh possesses. Meanwhile, the 49ers plan to retain Deebo Samuel for the 2025 season.
