Jerod Mayo has been fired as head coach of the New England Patriots after just one season, finishing with a 4-13 record. This marks the shortest tenure in franchise history, matching Rod Rust’s 1-15 record in 1990. Owner Robert Kraft expressed his difficulty in making the decision, citing Mayo’s 17-year relationship with the team and his leadership qualities. Despite a season-opening win against Cincinnati, the team’s performance did not meet expectations. The Patriots won Mayo’s final game, a 23-16 victory over the Buffalo Bills, which affected their draft position, dropping them from No. 1 to No. 4 in the 2025 NFL Draft. Mayo, who was handpicked by Kraft to succeed Bill Belichick, had a background as a linebacker for the Patriots from 2008-2015 and later served as a linebackers coach. His defense struggled, ranking last in the NFL in quarterback contacts and having only 12 takeaways. The Patriots have not won a playoff game since Super Bowl LIII in 2019.
