3,483 Grants Flagged: Senate Republicans Target $2 Billion in Science Funding

Senate Republicans have flagged nearly 3,500 National Science Foundation (NSF) grants, totaling over $2 billion, as potentially ideological and of questionable scientific value. These grants, awarded between January 2021 and April 2024, represent more than 10 percent of all NSF grants during that period. The list includes research from all 50 states, with Texas receiving 257 grants worth over $150 million. The NSF, which funds about one-quarter of federal science and engineering research at American colleges and universities, has not taken any action in response to the complaints. Researchers like Darren Lipomi, whose project aims to help throat cancer patients recover from radiation therapy, and Shumpei Maruyama, a Japanese immigrant and cell biologist, express confusion and fear over the implications of being on this list. The situation has created an atmosphere of uncertainty among scientists.
