Cuts to NIH Funding Could Slash $16 Billion and 68,000 Jobs!

According to the Science & Community Impacts Mapping Project (SCIMap), proposed cuts to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) could have a significant economic impact across the United States. SCIMap’s analysis, based on a public database of NIH grants active in 2024, suggests that every dollar invested in NIH generates $2.56 in new economic activity. The project estimates that if NIH funding is reduced, the nation could lose $16 billion in economic activity and 68,000 jobs. These estimates are derived using the ratio of jobs supported per research funds awarded in the 2024 fiscal year. Additionally, SCIMap utilized Census data to understand how economic activity spreads from one county to another, highlighting the broader impact of these potential cuts.
