1 in 5 Grants Canceled: Judge Slams NIH’s Lack of Definition

A federal judge has ruled that the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) decision to cancel funding for many grants was illegal and arbitrary. The court found that officials at the NIH simply canceled lists of grants without examining their scientific merit, and then struggled to retroactively describe a policy that justified the actions. This lack of definition led to the cancellation of approximately 1 in 5 grants, with over 300 grants affected.

The judge’s written ruling states that the government’s actions were “arbitrary and capricious” because they failed to define the problems that would get a grant canceled. The court also found that officials within the NIH struggled to retroactively describe a policy that justified the cancellations, leading several of them to resign.

In total, over $100 million in funding was affected by the NIH’s decision. The judge’s ruling is a significant blow to the Trump administration’s efforts to cancel these grants, and highlights the importance of clear definitions and transparent decision-making processes in government agencies.

When canceling hundreds of grants in an anti-“DEI” crusade, NIH officials couldn’t even define the acronym, a federal judge found. It was just a “boogeyman.” That and more in my legal roundup @AllRiseNews https://allrisenews.com/p/trump-invasion-asylum-blocked…

Judge: You can’t ban DEI grants without bothering to define DEI

This week, NIH released new terms for research grants. If you accept a grant, you cannot have any DEI program and… You cannot discriminate against Israel or Israeli companies. That’s oddly specific.
