31 Employees Laid Off and Freelancers Trapped in Vicious Cycle: The Shocking Statistics of Keywords’ Translation Industry Practices

In a revealing look at the translation industry, statistics show that Keywords, a multinational game service provider, laid off 31 employees last summer to boost profit margins ahead of an acquisition by the equity fund EQT. The company’s freelance translators, though not directly affected by the layoffs, report a continuous decline in their working conditions and compensation. According to unions AVTE and Tramiti, freelancers at Keywords often remain stuck at entry-level rates, earning monthly incomes comparable to those of unskilled beginners despite years of experience. Additionally, Keywords is said to employ a “wholesaler approach,” suggesting freelancers could earn more by accepting lower rates for more projects, yet this method lacks guarantees. The unions also highlight that Keywords’ rates for translations assisted by AI are set at two-thirds of the rate for purely human work, despite AI’s limited practical help in multimedia translation. Efforts by AVTE and Tramiti to engage Keywords in collective bargaining have been met with silence, with no response to their communications as of April 14, 2025.

being a freelancer is often like you and your client are in a situationship – your are left on read many times, you will alway go out of your way more, and you keep freelancing hoping it could turn into a full time
