Toyota Motor is venturing into the cosmos with a hefty investment of 7 billion yen ($44.4 million) in Interstellar Technologies Inc., a Japanese startup focused on developing orbital launch vehicles. This move aims to broaden the future of mobility beyond Earth. Interstellar Technologies, established in 2013, has already launched seven suborbital MOMO rockets, with the first reaching space in 2019. The company plans to develop larger rockets, ZERO and DECA, for satellite deployment. Toyota’s involvement leverages its expertise in mass production to potentially revolutionize rocket manufacturing. This investment positions Toyota against Mitsubishi, whose H3 rockets compete with SpaceX’s Falcon 9 in the global launch market. Additionally, Toyota has completed the first phase of Woven City, a 175-acre “prototype city of the future” at the base of Mount Fuji, designed to test and develop emerging technologies like autonomous vehicles.
