Supreme Court to Decide Fate of TikTok: 170 Million Users Hang in the Balance

The Supreme Court has agreed to review a federal law that could potentially ban or force the sale of TikTok, affecting its 170 million American users. The court declined to issue an injunction to halt the ban temporarily but set a rapid timeline for arguments, with briefs due by December 27 and oral arguments starting January 10. The law in question, the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, is under scrutiny for possibly violating the First Amendment. TikTok and its supporters argue that the government’s national security concerns are speculative rather than based on current evidence. If TikTok loses, it might have to shut down in the US, disrupting global users. Legal experts believe TikTok has a strong case, but the outcome could set a precedent for online speech restrictions.
