The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has imposed a temporary ban on drones over parts of New Jersey, effective until January 17, 2025. This decision follows numerous drone sightings that alarmed residents and prompted investigations. The FAA issued 22 orders, creating “temporary flight restrictions for special security reasons” over critical infrastructure. These restrictions cover areas like Evesham, Hamilton, and Jersey City, among others. The FAA warned that unauthorized drone flights could lead to interception, detention, and potential criminal charges. The FBI reported over 5,000 drone sightings in recent weeks, but investigations suggest these include lawful commercial, hobbyist, and law enforcement drones, as well as misidentified manned aircraft. Despite the sightings, no national security or public safety threat has been identified. Authorities have advised against shooting down drones, citing legal and safety concerns.
