64.9% of US Market: TP-Link Routers Under Scrutiny

US authorities are investigating TP-Link, a major player in the router market, for potential national security risks. TP-Link, which claims to have relocated its headquarters to the US, holds a significant 64.9% of the US market for home and small-office routers. The investigation stems from concerns over security vulnerabilities in TP-Link devices, which have been exploited in cyberattacks linked to the Chinese government. Notably, TP-Link routers are used by the Defense Department and other federal agencies. The Commerce, Defense, and Justice departments are probing the company, with potential actions including a ban on sales in the US. Despite these concerns, TP-Link has been recognized for its reliability and value, ranking first in PCMag’s Readers’ Choice awards and being recommended by RTINGS for budget-friendly options. However, the company faces allegations of shipping routers with unaddressed security flaws and not engaging with security researchers.
