Sam Darnold, the 27-year-old quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, is unlikely to receive the franchise tag before the deadline. Despite his impressive performance last season, where he led the team to 14 wins and ranked fifth in the NFL with 4,319 passing yards and 35 touchdown passes, the Vikings are not expected to tag him. Darnold’s career stats include 16,383 passing yards, 98 touchdowns, and 68 interceptions over seven seasons. His journey began with the New York Jets, followed by stints with the Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers, before joining the Vikings. His final two games, however, were less stellar, with 23 off-target throws and 11 sacks, leading to losses against the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams. Despite these setbacks, Darnold’s strong training camp performance positioned him as the Week 1 starter, especially after J.J. McCarthy, the intended quarterback of the future, suffered a season-ending injury.
