New York’s $15 Broadband Law: A Game-Changer for Low-Income Households

New York’s Affordable Broadband Act (ABA) will enforce a $15 broadband plan for low-income households starting January 15, 2025. This law, upheld by a US appeals court in April 2024, requires Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to offer plans at $15 for 25Mbps or $20 for 200Mbps. The price includes all recurring taxes, fees, and equipment rental. ISPs can only increase prices by 2% annually. The law’s enforcement follows a multi-year legal battle, with the Supreme Court declining to hear the ISPs’ challenge in December 2024. This victory for New York marks a significant test case for state regulation of broadband providers, especially in the absence of federal oversight.
