Madison Keys, the 19th seed, clinched her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling three-set match, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5. At 29, Keys is now the second-oldest first-time women’s winner of the tournament. She started strong, breaking Sabalenka early with the help of two double faults. Keys’ serve was nearly perfect, missing only one first serve in the first two games. Sabalenka, on the other hand, struggled, committing four double faults in the first set alone, her highest in a single set at Melbourne. Despite Sabalenka’s impressive record of 10-1 in majors after losing the first set, Keys fought back, securing the victory with a stunning inside-out forehand winner on her second championship point. Keys’ journey included five three-set wins, the most in a single Australian Open since the Open era began, and she defeated four top-10 seeds en route to the title.
