Google Maps in West Bank: 70% of Users Report Navigation Issues

In the West Bank, Google Maps has become nearly unusable for many, with 70% of users reporting significant navigation problems. Since the conflict escalated, the app has been directing users into walls, ignoring time-consuming checkpoints, and guiding them onto restricted roads. These issues stem from the challenges of mapping in a conflict zone, where road checkpoints change frequently. Google does not differentiate between Israeli and Palestinian roads, as this would require knowing users’ citizenship. Despite efforts to improve services, many locals have abandoned Google Maps. A Google spokesperson mentioned ongoing efforts to enhance the app’s functionality in the region.
