A Major League Baseball investigation has been launched into Cleveland Guardians right-hander Luis Ortiz after a betting-integrity firm flagged unusual gambling activity on his pitches. According to sources, IC360 sent an alert in June regarding Ortiz’s first pitches in select innings, which had received significant action from sportsbook operators in Ohio, New York, and New Jersey. The alert referenced bets on Ortiz’s first pitches being well outside the strike zone, with 26% of the total bets flagged as suspicious.
Ortiz has been placed on “non-disciplinary paid leave” through July 17, which was negotiated between MLB and the MLB Players Association. If the investigation remains open, the leave could be extended. The alert on Ortiz’s first pitches is part of a growing trend in baseball, with some sportsbooks offering microbets on the result of individual pitches.
The investigation comes as MLB continues to crack down on gambling violations, having levied a lifetime ban against San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano for placing nearly 400 bets on baseball last year. Four other players received one-year suspensions for gambling on baseball while in the minor leagues.

6h Just from a statistical perspective I’ve gotta imagine the volume of “individual pitch” bettors is quite low, so any deviation at all will result in a flagged AI response
