$6 Billion in Bets: Connecticut Considers Capping Online Sports Betting

Connecticut’s sports betting market has seen a staggering $6 billion in handle since its legalization in October 2021. Now, lawmakers are contemplating a bill, SB01464, that could introduce a cap on online sports betting wagers. This bill, introduced in the Senate’s Joint Committee on General Law, aims to join the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement (MSIGA), allowing online poker players to compete across state lines. However, it also includes a clause to limit online sports bets, with the specific cap to be determined by the Commissioner of Consumer Protection. This move could impact high-stake bettors and potentially reduce state tax revenues. The state’s betting sector has shown significant growth, with the top five monthly betting handles occurring between September last year and January this year. If passed, SB01464 could reshape Connecticut’s online gambling landscape.
