From $900M Box Office Hit to 300 Million Copies Sold: The Stats Behind ‘A Minecraft Movie’

The film ‘A Minecraft Movie’ has surpassed $900 million at the box office. This success story began when producer Jill Messick recognized her son’s passion for the game Minecraft around 2011. At that time, Minecraft had already sold 300 million copies and boasted nearly 140 million monthly active players. Messick’s initiative led to a pivotal meeting with Mojang Studios in Stockholm, Sweden. Mojang, the indie startup behind Minecraft, was cautious about Hollywood’s interest but eventually agreed to collaborate. The deal for the movie rights was finalized in February 2014, coinciding with the success of ‘The Lego Movie,’ which grossed over $470 million. Mojang was later acquired by Microsoft for $2.5 billion in September 2014. The development of ‘A Minecraft Movie’ spanned 10 years, involving numerous writers and filmmakers. Warner Bros. and Legendary honored Messick’s contribution by inviting her family to the world premiere in London on March 30, which also happened to be Mothers Day in the U.K.
