Messick’s initiative led to a pivotal meeting with Mojang Studios in Stockholm, Sweden. Mojang, the indie startup behind Minecraft, was cautious about Hollywood’s interest but eventually agreed to collaborate. The deal for the movie rights was finalized in February 2014, coinciding with the success of ‘The Lego Movie,’ which grossed over $470 million.
