A$1.6 Million Grant Fuels Revolutionary Wearable X-Ray for Kids!

University of Queensland researchers have secured a A$1.6 million ($1 million) grant to develop a groundbreaking wearable X-ray detector. This innovative device, designed to be integrated into hoodies or blankets, aims to provide quick and accurate lung scans for children. The project utilizes patented quantum dot hybrid glass transformed into thin film strips that adapt to a child’s body movements. Funded over five years by the National Health and Medical Research Council, the initiative targets critical pediatric conditions like respiratory distress syndrome, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and chronic lung disease. Associate Professor Jingwei Hou from UQ’s School of Chemical Engineering highlighted the potential of this technology in imaging other pediatric and adult diseases.
