The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has initiated an investigation into Apple and Google’s mobile platforms, which together control approximately 90% of the UK smartphone market. This probe, the second under the new digital markets regime, aims to assess if these tech giants should face additional regulatory scrutiny. The focus is on how Apple and Google manage their ecosystems, including app stores, browsers, and operating systems. The CMA will explore whether these companies favor their own services, how they compete with each other, and if developers are treated equitably. This investigation follows the recent appointment of Doug Gurr, former head of Amazon UK, as the interim CMA chair, after the government removed Marcus Bokkerink from the position. The inquiry could lead to new regulations that might foster innovation and growth in the UK by ensuring a more competitive mobile environment.
