Coal Plant Retirements Delayed: 3-Year Extension for Gibson Plant

The retirement plans for some of the largest coal plants in the U.S. have been slightly delayed, but this does not signal a coal industry revival. The Gibson plant in Indiana, the second-largest in the country, had its closure date pushed back from 2035 to 2038. This adjustment, announced by Duke Energy in October, reflects a minor extension rather than a significant shift in the coal sector’s trajectory. Similarly, Southern Co. had planned to close Plant Bowen, the largest coal plant with a capacity of 3,200 megawatts, by 2035 at the latest. These changes indicate a slowdown in the decline of coal usage, which is detrimental to environmental goals. However, there is virtually no construction of new coal plants, suggesting that these delays are not part of a broader resurgence in coal power.
