AI-Powered Documentation System Saves Hospitals $10M

WakeMed Health & Hospitals has made significant strides in reducing physician burnout and improving electronic health record (EHR) accuracy by implementing an AI-powered documentation system. The effort, led by Dr. David Kirk, focused on patients seen by hospitalist teams and provided protected time for education. As a result, the hospital achieved a 3% improvement in severity of illness and a 3.6% improvement in CC/MCC capture rate.

The most notable statistic is that the AI-powered system generated $10 million in savings, with $9.3 million potentially denied due to inaccurate documentation. Additionally, the improved documentation led to an increase of $871,000 in new revenue from Medicare Severity Diagnosis-Related Group payments.

This isn’t charity—it’s high-ROI public health. Studies show: • 30–60% reduction in preventable ER visits • $2–$3 saved per $1 invested • Lower readmissions, higher med adherence Take some examples:

Slightly utopian wishful thinking in the NHS ten year plan 1. Pharmacogenomics will not realise a 2.2 billion saving – not everything is preventable by PGX. 2. Most interactions are already screened digitally by rules, the added benefit of AI is unlikely to free up much time.
