1 in 5: Extreme Weather Events on the Rise

According to recent data, extreme weather events have become increasingly common, making it crucial for organizations like the National Weather Service (NWS) to stay ahead of the curve. As shown in the map above, the NWS is currently tracking multiple alerts across the United States.

A Moderate Risk of flash flooding has been issued for central Texas, where ongoing impactful flash flooding may hinder recovery efforts. This type of event is not uncommon, with statistics showing that 1 in 5 Americans lives in a flood-prone area. In fact, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States.

In addition to flash flooding, an Enhanced Risk of severe thunderstorms has been issued for portions of the Plains today. This type of event poses significant threats, including severe wind gusts and damaging hail. The NWS is closely monitoring T.D. Chantal as it continues across the Mid-Atlantic, where local flash flooding is possible.

Meanwhile, extreme heat is gripping the West, with temperatures soaring to record-breaking levels in some areas. As the frequency and severity of these events continue to rise, it’s essential for the NWS and other organizations to provide accurate and timely warnings to help protect life and property.
