“$2.8 Billion NCAA Settlement: Will It Reshape College Sports?”

The NCAA has agreed to a $2.8 billion settlement to resolve three antitrust lawsuits. This deal, known as the House settlement, aims to compensate past and current Division I athletes for limited earning potential due to NCAA rules. The settlement proposes a new system allowing schools to pay athletes directly, starting this summer. It includes a salary cap of about $20.5 million per school annually, increasing over the 10-year term of the deal. The agreement also enhances the power of major conferences to regulate name, image, and likeness deals. However, the settlement faces scrutiny over roster limits, potentially affecting thousands of athletes’ spots on teams. Judge Claudia Wilken, overseeing the case, suggested grandfathering current athletes to mitigate roster cuts. Concerns also arise about the distribution of the $2.8 billion, with men, particularly football and basketball players, expected to receive at least 90% of the funds. The settlement’s approval remains pending as Wilken addresses final concerns.

Big changes are coming to college sports. If the House v. NCAA settlement is approved, schools can begin paying athletes directly through revenue sharing—capped at $20.5M/year per program—starting July 1, 2025. Each year the “cap” will rise. But let’s be clear: revenue sharing
