Alex Ovechkin tied Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record of 894 goals during the Washington Capitals’ 5-3 win against the Chicago Blackhawks. Ovechkin scored twice, with his record-tying goal coming on a power play with 13:47 left in the third period. Despite an opportunity to break the record with an empty-net goal, Ovechkin declined, expressing his desire to achieve the milestone against a goaltender. Rookie Ryan Leonard scored his first career goal into the empty net, sealing the victory. Ovechkin took four shots in the final 1:18 but did not score again. This season, Ovechkin has scored 41 goals, 10 of which were empty-netters. His 894th goal was also his 136th game-winner, surpassing Jaromir Jagr’s record. The Capitals have six games left in the regular season.
