Alex Ovechkin scored his 892nd career goal during the Washington Capitals’ 5-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. This goal brings him just three away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record. Ovechkin, aged 39, has now scored 10 goals in 13 games against Hurricanes’ goalie Frederik Andersen. Against Carolina, he has tallied 53 goals in 92 games and 32 goals in 46 games played in Raleigh. This season, Ovechkin has netted 39 goals, tying for the second-highest single-season total among players aged 39 or older. He is one goal shy of reaching 40 goals for the 14th time in his career, a league record. Ovechkin’s goal No. 891 came the previous night in a 4-3 win against the Boston Bruins, marking his 60th time scoring in back-to-back regular-season games. With seven games left in the season, Ovechkin is on pace to break the record on April 13 against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
