27% Surge in Global Luxury Spending: French Retailer Printemps Opens First U.S. Store

French luxury retailer Printemps has opened its first U.S. store in New York City’s Financial District. The 55,000-square-foot store spans two floors and features a unique mix of popular luxury brands and rare French brands, with about 25% of its brands not available or rare in the U.S. The store’s design, inspired by a Parisian apartment, includes creative merchandise displays and food concepts like a restaurant and a café with French pastries. A highlight is the Red Room, an Art Deco-style space restored by Printemps and turned into a “shoe forest” with a nearby bar. The global luxury industry is projected to grow 1% to 3% annually through 2027, a significant slowdown from the 27% jump in global luxury spending from 2020 to 2021. In 2024, global luxury spending across goods and services totaled an estimated $500 billion. Despite the slowdown, Americans are the third-largest spenders for Printemps, with sales to American customers tripling from 2019 to 2024.
