Up 125% in a Decade: Rare Watches Surge as Top Investment

A 1999 platinum Rolex Daytona, one of only four known to exist, is set to be auctioned at Sotheby’s Geneva on May 11. This custom-made watch, featuring a mother-of-pearl dial with 10 diamonds, could fetch up to $1.7 million. Rolex did not produce platinum Daytonas until 2013, making this piece exceptionally rare. The other three watches from the same private family commission have already sold for over $3 million each. According to Knight Frank’s latest index, the value of watches has increased by more than 125% over the past decade, ranking them among the top luxury investments. Despite a slight cooling with only a 1.7% rise in the past year, the five-year growth rate for watches stands at 52.7%. Demand continues to grow, driven by international buyers and a new wave of collectors under 30.

Happy to see high luxury brands embracing Persian art. Jaeger-LeCoultre rolled out their limited edition Shahnameh watches and they’re beautiful. Would totally buy one myself but there’s only 40 and they’re priced at over $100k each.
