7 NCAA Tournaments and 297 Wins: The Statistical Legacy of Fran McCaffery at Iowa

Fran McCaffery was dismissed as head coach of the Iowa men’s basketball team after 15 seasons. He leaves as the school’s all-time wins leader with 297 victories, including 143 in the Big Ten. Under his leadership, Iowa made seven NCAA tournament appearances, reaching the second round four times. McCaffery’s teams were known for their offensive prowess, ranking in the top 20 in adjusted offensive efficiency for eight consecutive seasons. Since 2021, four Iowa players were selected in the NBA draft, including first-round picks Keegan Murray and Kris Murray in 2022 and 2023, and Luka Garza, a two-time first-team All-American and 2021 Wooden Award winner. Despite recent struggles, missing the NCAA tournament the last two seasons, McCaffery’s impact on the program was significant. Iowa finished the most recent season with a 17-16 record overall and 7-13 in the Big Ten, ending with a 106-94 loss to Illinois in the Big Ten tournament. The school will now begin a national search for a new coach.
