The Los Angeles Chargers have released Joey Bosa, their longest-tenured player, saving $25.36 million in cap space. Bosa, drafted third overall in 2016, ranks second in franchise history with 72 career sacks. He was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2016, recording 10.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss. Bosa made four Pro Bowls in his first six seasons and set an NFL record with 19 sacks in his first 20 games. In 2020, he signed a five-year, $135 million contract, the richest for a defensive player at the time. However, injuries limited him to 28 games over the past three seasons. Despite this, he was selected to his fifth Pro Bowl in 2024 as an alternate. In the Chargers’ playoff loss to the Houston Texans, Bosa led the team with six pressures and one sack. His release leaves the Chargers with $90.6 million in cap space.
