Recent actions by the US government have led to a significant pause in foreign aid, particularly affecting reproductive health programs worldwide. On January 20, President Trump ordered a 90-day assessment of US foreign development assistance, halting programs that support reproductive care. This freeze has dire consequences: estimates suggest that over the next 90 days, more than 8,000 women could die from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth if funding isn’t reinstated. The global gag rule, reinstated on January 24, further restricts organizations from providing abortion counseling, stripping them of necessary funds. MSI Reproductive Choices, for instance, lost $14 million, impacting over 2 million women and girls who would have received contraceptive services. The US Agency for International Development (USAID), with a 2025 budget of $42.8 billion, has seen its funding frozen, leading to immediate and ongoing disruptions in global health programs. This includes halted clinical trials, job losses, and the shutdown of health services. The ripple effects are profound, with unintended pregnancies likely to increase, potentially leading to unsafe abortions and further maternal deaths.
