The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has removed at least 135 datasets from its public data platform since President Trump’s inauguration. This action appears to be part of an effort to eliminate language deemed objectionable by the administration. Notably, the term “gender” has been a focal point, with 67 items removed specifically for containing this word. In response to these changes, STAT began real-time monitoring of the CDC’s data platform on January 31, 2025. Between November 25, 2024, and January 31, 2025, 133 items were removed, with 61 of these not scheduled for removal. Since monitoring began, an additional 74 items have disappeared. Some datasets have been reuploaded with modifications; for example, in the Heart Disease Mortality Data, 59,095 instances of “gender” were replaced with “sex.” Similarly, in the Alzheimer’s Disease and Health Aging Data, 68,838 rows were altered to replace “gender” with “sex.” STAT has archived all available files from data.cdc.gov to preserve the original data.
