Eli Lilly’s Chief Scientific Officer, Dan Skovronsky, is pushing the boundaries of obesity treatment. With Zepbound already on the market, Lilly is developing a daily pill and a potentially more powerful shot. The company has nine obesity drugs in clinical trials. Skovronsky emphasizes that future drugs must offer more than just weight loss. Amgen’s MariTide, for example, helped patients lose up to 20% of their body weight in a Phase 2 study, but its stock fell 5% due to competition concerns. Lilly is exploring incretin medicines for treating conditions like sleep apnea, addiction, heart disease, inflammation, and gastrointestinal issues. Skovronsky envisions pills like orforglipron reaching global markets and sees potential in drugs like retatrutide for even greater weight loss.
