Verizon has successfully dismissed a lawsuit from a utility pole worker, Mark Tiger, who claimed that exposure to lead cables made him sick. The lawsuit, filed in September 2023, was dismissed by US District Judge Nicholas Ranjan, who suggested that Tiger might have standing in state court. Tiger, who worked for companies contracted by Verizon and Comcast, alleged that his regular contact with lead-sheathed cables caused him to ingest and inhale lead, leading to symptoms like mood changes, headaches, nausea, and more. Despite not seeing a doctor due to lack of insurance, Tiger left his job in November 2024 due to health concerns. The lawsuit sought class action status for other similarly affected workers and demanded that Verizon dispose of the cables and fund medical monitoring. The Wall Street Journal reported in July 2023 that at least 2,000 such cables, installed by various phone companies, remain in place.
