Robocallers impersonating Federal Communications Commission (FCC) employees made a critical error by targeting actual FCC staff. Over a dozen FCC employees and some family members received these scam calls on February 6-7, 2024. The calls, using an artificial voice, claimed to be from the FCC’s nonexistent “Fraud Prevention Team” and demanded payment in Google gift cards to avoid jail time. The FCC confirmed it does not share staff personal phone numbers, and the method of targeting remains unclear. The scam operation made approximately 1,800 calls before their accounts were terminated. The FCC has proposed a fine of $4,492,500 against Telnyx, the voice service provider accused of facilitating these calls without proper customer verification. Telnyx denies the allegations and plans to contest the fine.
