Al Golden, aged 55, is set to return to the Cincinnati Bengals as their defensive coordinator. He previously served as the linebackers coach for the Bengals in 2020 and 2021, contributing to their Super Bowl run. Golden replaces Lou Anarumo, who was let go after the Bengals missed the playoffs for two consecutive years. During his tenure at Notre Dame, Golden’s defense was formidable, ranking fourth in points allowed per drive (1.21) among Power 4 teams. The Bengals’ defense struggled last season, finishing 26th in points allowed per drive, 30th in defensive red zone efficiency, and 30th in first downs allowed per game. The team aims to improve around star players like Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase, who both had standout seasons. The Bengals are also considering drafting Alabama linebacker Jihaad Campbell to bolster their defense.
