1 in 5 UK Users May Be Affected: Reddit’s Online Safety Act Compliance

Reddit has taken steps to comply with the UK’s Online Safety Act by requiring users to prove they are at least 18 years old before accessing adult content. According to the platform, this move aims to restrict certain types of content for users under 18, including sexually explicit, suicide-promoting, self-injury-promoting, hate-inciting, bullying, violent, injury-causing, substance-encouraging, body-shaming, and depression-romanticizing content.

To verify age, Reddit will store only the user’s verification status and birthdate, with no access to uploaded photos. The platform promises to retain photo uploads for 7 days before deleting them. Birthdates will be used solely for safety features and age-appropriate experiences.

The compliance deadline is July 25, which may affect approximately 1 in 5 UK users who currently have unrestricted access to adult content on the platform.
