According to the platform, this move aims to restrict certain types of content for users under 18, including sexually explicit, suicide-promoting, self-injury-promoting, hate-inciting, bullying, violent, injury-causing, substance-encouraging, body-shaming, and depression-romanticizing content.
To verify age, Reddit will store only the user’s verification status and birthdate, with no access to uploaded photos. The platform promises to retain photo uploads for 7 days before deleting them. Birthdates will be used solely for safety features and age-appropriate experiences.
The compliance deadline is July 25, which may affect approximately 1 in 5 UK users who currently have unrestricted access to adult content on the platform.
