Thermo Fisher Scientific and the Chan Zuckerberg Institute for Advanced Biological Imaging have formed a technology alliance to enhance cellular imaging. Their focus is on cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), crucial for disease research and developing therapeutics, including vaccines. The partnership aims to improve contrast and resolution in cellular imaging. They will build on existing collaborations with the University of California Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where the continuous laser phase plate for electron microscopy was developed. This technology will be further refined to achieve high-resolution imaging of cellular biology. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative views this project as a step towards solving major scientific challenges, such as creating advanced imaging systems for detailed observation of human cells. Additionally, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative has launched the Billion Cells Project, aiming to generate a one billion cell dataset to advance AI model development in biology. In 2020, they pledged $13.6 million for research on the coronavirus, aiding policymakers and healthcare workers.
