The New York Yankees hit nine home runs against the Milwaukee Brewers on March 29, sparking interest in the “torpedo” bat. This bat, developed by then-Yankees coach Aaron Leanhardt, has been in use for a few years. It brings more mass to the sweet spot, complying with MLB’s rules on bat shape. Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton used the bat in 2024 and plans to continue using it after recovering from elbow injuries. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred praised the bat, stating it’s “absolutely good for baseball.” He noted that players have been adjusting the sweet spot on bats for years. Following the Yankees’ performance, several players and teams ordered the torpedo bats. Manfred also discussed other topics, including the potential use of robot umpires in the majors by 2026 and MLB expansion, hoping to select cities by 2029.
