82-Year-Old Shock Advertising Guru Oliviero Toscani Dies: His Benetton Campaigns Grew Company 20 Times Over

Oliviero Toscani, the Italian photographer and art director known for his provocative Benetton campaigns, passed away at 82. His work with Benetton, which began in the early 1980s, focused on social issues rather than the company’s products, leading to a 20-fold increase in company size over 18 years. Toscani’s campaigns included a 1992 image of AIDS victim David Kirby, sparking controversy among religious groups and AIDS activists. He also tackled capital punishment with portraits of death row inmates in the late 1990s. Beyond Benetton, Toscani co-founded the magazine Colors and the research institute Fabrica. He continued to address social issues like gay rights and racism in his later work. Toscani is survived by his wife Kirsti and their three children.
