Target’s DEI Retreat: A 20% Drop in Diversity Goals

Target has announced a significant shift in its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategy, ending its three-year DEI goals. The company will no longer report to external diversity-focused groups like the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index. Additionally, Target is discontinuing a program aimed at increasing products from Black- or minority-owned businesses. This decision comes after years of data analysis and evolving external landscapes, as stated by Kiera Fernandez, Target’s chief community impact and equity officer. Despite these changes, there are no job cuts associated with this announcement. Target’s workforce diversity statistics for the fiscal year ending in early February 2024 show that 43% of employees were white, 31% Hispanic/Latino, 15% Black, and 5% Asian. However, the leadership team was less diverse, with 72% white, 11% Hispanic/Latino, 11% Asian, and 6% Black. This move aligns Target with other major corporations like Walmart, Meta, and McDonald’s, which have also scaled back on DEI commitments.
