$9.1 Million Spent on Social Media Influencers: The Hidden Cost of Political Campaigns

In the 2024 presidential election, Way to Win, a major donor group, spent over $9.1 million on social media influencers to support Kamala Harris’s campaign. This effort involved over 550 content creators who produced 6,644 posts across platforms like TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Twitch, and X. The group coached these creators on specific phrases and themes to promote pro-Kamala content. Despite the significant investment, the campaign’s impact was limited. For instance, seven video programs produced at the Democratic National Convention garnered fewer than 1,000 views in total, with one video receiving fewer than 40 views. The Harris campaign and its SuperPAC spent over $1.5 billion in the campaign’s final months, with a large portion allocated to consultants and media advertising. This spending included $100,000 on a temporary cardboard studio set for an interview. The payments to influencers were structured through nonprofit corporations, bypassing Federal Election Commission disclosure requirements, highlighting a gray area in election law.
