80% of Census Bureau’s Geographic Data Offline: What You Need to Know

As of February 4, 2025, the U.S. Census Bureau’s TIGER/Line shapefiles, which provide legal boundaries at various geographic levels, are currently unavailable. Users attempting to download these files receive a 403 error. This issue extends to any Census web interface that relies on FTP downloads. However, data.census.gov remains operational. The unavailability follows a directive from the administration on January 31, 2025, leading to the removal of public data from federal websites. IPUMS, a data preservation organization, has reassured the public that their microdata from several government agencies is still accessible. They have also been actively downloading and preserving original data from U.S. statistical agencies. Efforts are underway to catalog and redistribute the affected datasets, with IPUMS promising to provide resources and guidance on locating or sharing missing data.
