75% Revenue Drop: Crypto Scammers Hack YouTubers, Exploiting Trust in Brands

Crypto scammers are using sophisticated phishing attacks to hack into the accounts of popular fighting game YouTubers. These scammers impersonate marketing managers from well-known brands on X (formerly Twitter), engaging in detailed discussions before sending a malicious link or PDF disguised as an NDA. Once clicked, the malware takes over the account within minutes, replacing content with crypto scam videos. Michael Townsend, known as “Rooflemonger,” lost access to his channel for days, missing out on a lucrative news cycle and losing thousands of subscribers. He estimates a 75% drop in his YouTube revenue post-hack. The scam has affected nearly half of the fighting game content creators, with several notable names like AngryBird, HookGangGod, and Spooky falling victim. YouTube’s recovery process has been described as slow and cumbersome, with creators like Townsend struggling to regain their channel’s former standing and revenue. The scammers’ tactics have evolved, making it harder for even experienced YouTubers to detect the phishing attempts.
